Juha Hernesniemi in memoriam – muistokeräys neurokirurgian tutkimukselle

Juha Hernesniemi (1947-2023) tunnettiin yhtenä maailman parhaista neurokirurgeista. Hän työskenteli 1997-2015 Helsingin yliopiston neurokirurgian professorina ja neurokirurgian klinikan ylilääkärinä Töölön sairaalassa ja 1981-1997 Kuopion yliopistollisen sairaalan neurokirurgian klinikalla. Hernesniemi ehti uransa aikana hoitaa 70 000 potilasta ja tehdä 16 000 leikkausta. Hän toimi vierailijaprofessorina kymmenissä yliopistoissa kirjoitti satoja tieteellisiä artikkeleita. Jäätyään eläkkeelle Suomessa 68-vuotiaana hän jatkoi leikkauksia mm. Kiinassa.

Aivosäätiö yhteistyössä Juha Hernesniemen perheen kanssa järjestää muistokeräyksen hänen elämäntyönsä kunniaksi. Keräyksen tuotto ohjataan Juha Hernesniemen nimikkorahastoon Aivosäätiössä, joka tukee neurokirurgian tutkimusta. Aivosäätiö jakaa vuosittain apurahoja lupaaville aivotutkijoille.

Juha Hernesniemen kaikille avoin siunaustilaisuus pidettiin Vantaan Pyhän Laurin kirkossa lauantaina 29.7.2023. Kukkien sijasta Hernesniemen perhe toivoi lahjoituksia Juha Hernesniemen neurokirurgian tutkimusrahastoon Aivosäätiössä.

Juha Hernesniemi in memoriam – a memorial fundraiser for neurosurgery research 

Juha Hernesniemi (1947-2023) was known as one of the best neurosurgeons in the world. Between 1997 and 2015 he worked as a professor in the University of Helsinki and as a and head surgeon in the neurosurgery clinic at the Töölö hospital and between 1981 and 1997 in the neurosurgery clinic at the Kuopio University Hospital. During his career, he treated over 70 000 patients and completed over 16 000 surgeries. He was visiting professor in dozens of universities around the world and wrote hundreds of scientific articles. After retiring in Finland at the age of 68, he continued surgeries in China among other places.

The Finnish Brain Foundation (Aivosäätiö) together with the Hernesniemi family organizes a fundraiser to honor the life of Juha Hernesniemi. The donations will be proceeded to Juha Hernesniemi’s fund that supports the research of neurosurgery. Aivosäätiö awards grants to promising brain researchers annually.

Juha Hernesniemi’s memorial service was held at the Pyhä Lauri church in Vantaa, Finland on Saturday 29 July, 2023. The event  was open for public. In lieu of flowers, Juha’s family wished donations to his memorial fund.
